How Costa Ricans celebrate national “Tico” culture
Hi There, let´s learn about the Costa Rican National Holidays and how the Costa Ricans celebrate their "Tico" culture.
Costa Ricans like to celebrate their national holidays in different ways, the following are some of the most important celebrations and you will find a little explanation on how "Ticos" celebrate them.
But first of all, do you know what the word "Tico" means?
The word "Tico" is referred to the way that Costa Ricans call themselves, basically because of the way they speak, for example if a Tico wants to say very little, he or she normally say is "pequeñitico", if they don´t like something or think is very ugly, they say is "feitico" and so on.
If you noticed, the Spanish words have the similar t-i-c-o ending and that is how the name came up.

New Year´s Eve
Ticos celebrate the new year´s eve together with their families, a nice dinner is prepared and they share and celebrate the arrival of a new year with lots of faith and joy. In many homes, fireworks are commonly lighted with the arrival of the new year.
Holy Week
This religious holiday is celebrated with beautiful parades in the main streets and participants same as the spectators show all the respect and fervor for this important catholic celebration.
Nicoya’s Party Annexation Day
It is an important civic day, because the Ticos celebrate the annexation of the important Guanacaste region to the country, since July 25th 1824.
The day of the Virgin of Los Angeles
Another important religious holiday that Ticos celebrate on August the 2nd, there are big pilgrimages done from different areas of Costa Rica to Cartago to offer their sacrifice for the promise to have a favor granted by the Virgin of Los Angeles.
